  • A foolproof method for getting out of your own way

A brilliant, immersive introduction to the essentials of improvisation. My piano playing feels invigorated, and I know I'll continue to use the exercises and tips I've learnt.

This workshop is for you if:

  • You're an adventurous piano player with a technique that is anywhere from basic to advanced
  • You want to improvise, but you're not sure how to start
  • You feel overwhelmed, because you think you need to know all about scales, chords and inversions

Totnes School of Piano was started by Lona Kozik and Sam Richards in Totnes in the UK in 2012. We blend experimentation and improvisation with traditional teaching approaches and encourage students to find musical freedom through listening and exploration.

"Teaching improvisation is one of the delights of my musical life - as well as improvising myself. I teach improvisation, because I have an almost missionary belief in it. In order to improvise effectively you have to listen - and listening is a much needed practice in the world today. You might say I'm an improvisation fundamentalist! I also love the way improvisation takes you to unexpected, sometimes unusual places." -Sam Richards
